1809<1/2 C> Normal Date. C-1, B-2, R.5. Die State 3--Corroded, NCS--VG Details. Fair 2 EAC. Close date, 1 slightly high; High leaf left of right edge of S. Only a few examples of this die state are known, including this and another from the Roger Cohen Collection. When Ron Manley published The Die State Book, he described this state as semi-unique, meaning that he was aware of only two examples, both in the Roger Cohen Collection sale. In the following six years since his book was published, three more examples have been reported, bringing the total population to just five coins.
The fields are dark brown with lighter olive color on the devices. Heavily porous on both sides, obliterating much of the remaining design details. The rim break over MERI, however, is fully visible and complete. This example was graded Fair 2 in the Cohen catalog, and that assessment is probably accurate from the viewpoint of value or net grade. Perhaps this is an example that will appeal to the collector seeking an example of 1809 Cohen-1 that is moderately priced, but more than likely the die state collectors will pursue this coin actively, with an associated higher price. In his notes, Jules recorded that this example was a gift from Roger Cohen's widow, Debbie.
Ex: Norman Brand; Roger S. Cohen, Jr. (Superior, 2/1992), lot 258. Envelope Included.
