1809<1/2 C> C-5, B-5, R.1. Die State 1. AU58 NGC. XF45 EAC. 9 over inverted 9; High leaf just beyond S, TES level. Light obverse die cracks are visible along with a small lump below the final A of AMERICA. Breen called this a rust pit and suggested that it grows slightly larger, while Manley suggested that it weakens or disappears with die lapping in later states. The other example of this variety in the Reiver Collection, clearly in a later die state, has no trace of that lump, illustrating the accuracy of Manley's conclusion. This example is representative of the most common die state of the variety, with examples available in all grades including Mint State. The surfaces have intermingled deep steel and olive-green coloration. Most of the border dentils are visible, although they are quite weak at the upper obverse and upper reverse. For many years this variety was described as an "1809/6" overdate, and only more recently as a 9 over inverted 9. In reality, it is impossible to determine exactly what the blundered date actually represents. Breen Die State III.
Ex: George Ramont (9/1967). Envelope Included.
