1808/7 $5 --Date Tooled, Cleaned--ANACS. AU55 Details. Close Date, Breen-6455, BD-2, High R.4. The small, mint-made circular depression under Liberty's jaw provides for easy attribution, as does the lowest lock of hair above the 0 in the date, which is partially effaced from die lapping. A long, straight die crack bisects the obverse from star 2, through Liberty's cap to 1 o'clock. A second crack runs from the rim through star 11 to a rear hair curl. Both of the ANACS caveats seem on the harsh side: There are no obvious tooling marks at the date, and only the overly glossy reverse appears cleaned, while the obverse is satiny and attractive. A rare and underappreciated issue, about four times as rare as the non-overdate 1808.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
