1808/7 $5 AU58 NGC. Breen-6455, BD-2, rated R.4+ with an estimated population of 80-100 pieces in all grades. The mintage of the overdate is unknown as it was included in Mint reports among the total for 1808, which was 55,578 coins. Most "transition year" overdates (those made from dies left over from the previous year but having one digit modified, a cost-saving move on the Mint's part, back in 1808) are generally quite scarce because only one such die was typically used, until it wore out. This specimen is quite handsome, especially for the grade, with generous amounts of soft luster around the devices that is satiny and little disturbed by abrasions. Two light marks appear on the obverse but are not noticeable without a magnifier. The stars are sharp, but the highpoints of the eagle (specifically the head and neck) are softly struck. Far from perfect; nevertheless, a pleasing example of this rare variety. Those interested in collecting (or even owning one example of) this type, the John Reich design, should be sure to read Walter Breen's comments in his Complete Encyclopedia, pages 518-519, for they illuminate the intentions of these coins' symbolism as well as shed light on the engraving and minting situation two centuries ago, during the Philadelphia Mint's fledgling years.
From The Julian Collection.

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
