1808/7 $5 --Obverse Repaired--NCS. AU Details. Wide Date, Breen-6454, BD-1, R.6. An impressively rare overdate variety, of which perhaps fewer than 30 examples survive, according to Dannreuther and Bass (2006). The second overdate variety of this date and denomination (BD-2) is somewhat less scarce, with approximately 80 to 100 survivors. A vertical die crack that bisects the obverse is the most obvious diagnostic feature that distinguishes BD-1 from BD-2. This example displays pleasing lime-green and peach toning over shimmering surfaces. Highpoint wear and small marks are modest for the AU Details grade. A patch in the left obverse field is shinier and lighter in color than the surrounding areas, indicating an attempt to repair the coin. A less obvious repair is noted behind Liberty's cap. An affordable representative of this extremely important early gold overdate variety.

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
