1808 50C MS64 PCGS. O-104, R.2. A small die defect lin
1808<50C> MS64 PCGS. O-104, R.2. A small die defect line crosses from the R of LIBERTY diagonally into the cap, and a longer die lines crosses the ribbons in back of the cap. The L in LIBERTY shows a series of parallel, clearly intentionally produced horizontal lines inside the incused letter--an hour of boredom in Philadelphia, or twenty minutes of mischief? On the reverse, a die line extends upward from the olive stem to near the eagle's claw. This lovely near-Gem shows brilliant cartwheel luster and a total absence of mentionable distractions. The obverse is untoned, while the reverse shows a tinge of golden-copper. The strike is bold and without complaint, although both dies show moderate erosion. This piece appears to be well within the Condition Census: Overton and Parsley's fourth edition lists an MS65 and three MS63s. A search through our permanent auction archives shows that this is apparently the highest graded specimen of this variety that we have offered by a full 11 points, at least since we began those archives. The Reiver Collection had only a single XF45 example.
