Lightly cleaned but plainly above average for the grade and year. The 1808 is a key one-year Type (unlike the half eagle whose design by John Reich continued from 1807 through 1812). Typical for the issue are flat stars on the right, one or two flat stars on the left but the others showing their radial lines; The rims are either gone or only smooth outlines rather than normal denticles. As for the centers, this has a very good strike, including most hair curls and the clasp at the shoulder which holds the drapery together. The eagle is well detailed, as is the shield. Again, the rim is unevenly struck, showing a few denticles along the left and lower portion, but an absense of a rim elsewhere, as though the dies were slightly tilted out of alignment in the press. Only 2,710 pieces were minted of the rare 1808.
