1808 1C MS66 Brown NGC. S-278, R.3. Formerly offered as lot 5859 in our July 2002 New York Signature Sale, where the description read: "The Philadelphia Mint continued to receive copper planchets from the Birmingham, England firm of Boulton & Watt through the end of the Classic Cent series in 1814. Apparently, the planchet quality was not as high as on those used for earlier U.S. Cents, as examples of the Classic type are very difficult to locate in high circulated and Mint State grades. The first-year 1808, like the 1809, 1811, and 1813, is often dark and porous. That said, we direct bidder attention to this important Gem. A premium quality representative, both sides exhibit rich orange-brown patina with a blush of glossy-brown color over the top of Liberty's head. Like the plate coin in Noyes' 1991 book United States Large Cents: 1793-1814, this coin was struck slightly off center with softer peripheral definition over the right sides. All of the major features, however, are evident, although a few of the letters in STATES are softly detailed. Both sides are uncommonly distraction-free for this conditionally rare type." NGC and PCGS combined report just five coins in MS66 Brown, with no similarly colored coins graded finer (10/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
