1808<1/2 C> Overdate. C-2, B-2, High R.2. Die State 1--Damaged--NCS. VF Details. Fine 15 EAC. Overdate, final 8 low; Right stem extended to A. This is one of just two overdated obverse dies in the entire half cent series from 1793 to 1857, along with 1802/0 (the 1809/6 is actually not an overdate but a 9 over inverted 9). Each of these two overdated obverse dies were used in combination with two different reverse dies, for four overdate varieties. Three of these are in the present sale with the extremely rare 1808/7 Cohen-1 being absent. Although C-2 is not a rare variety, the 1808/7 overdate is an important major Guide Book type, and as such is always in demand. There is also a significant die state progression for this overdate, further adding to its overall desirability. As if that isn't enough, there are only about 10 of these that grade better than VF!
This is the earliest known die state with a faint crack visible between the tops of T and Y. Breen called this die state "perfect dies," but that is not entirely accurate. This obverse most likely cracked during the last examples of Cohen-1, but the overall low grade of those coins will not allow for such a determination. Although labeled as damaged by NCS, this is quite a pleasing coin with faint hairline scratches visible on the obverse. The surfaces have lovely tan and light brown color with olive overtones. The devices are outlined with slightly darker color. A significant example of this overdate variety.
Ex: George Ramont (9/1967). Envelope Included.
