1808<1/2 C> Normal Date. C-3, B-3, R.1. Die State 3--Tooled--NCS. VF Details. VG10 EAC. Normal date, tall final 8; Right stem extended to A. The 1808 Normal Date Half Cent has one of the most unusual and distinctive dates in the history of American coinage. The second 8 in the date is considerably larger than the other digits, and has a unique appearance. Either the die had been completed in earlier years without the final digit, or the 8 punch broke during the die manufacturing process, leaving the engraver with no choice but to use the 0 punch from the denominator with overlapping punches. Fortunately for the engraver, the particular year allowed for this expediency. This example is from an early die state, although the surfaces do not allow for an exact determination. We have suggested State 3 due to the partially absent dentilation. The reverse is rotated about 45 degrees counterclockwise. Olive-brown surfaces exhibit minor porosity and light scratches, the latter perhaps from an attempt to diminish the appearance of the former. A couple small reddish corrosion spots are visible on the reverse.
Ex: Stock (4/1996). Envelope Included.
