1807 50C Draped Bust AU53 ICG. O-104, Low R.5. The O-104 is the only use of Obverse 3 and it is paired with the second and final use of Reverse B. The die cracks on the left side of the obverse give an indication of the short-lived nature of this die. The most easily found diagnostics on this obverse are the pair of rough, lump-like defects near the milling between stars 2 and 3. Curiously, the reverse has a similar die defect lump just to the left of the first S in STATES.
This is a bright coin that shows just the lightest presence of golden color around the margins. Noticeably deficient in details in the center of the obverse, the reverse is better defined relative to the obverse. A significant amount of mint luster remains around the devices, with more as expected on the reverse because of the more crowded design elements on that side.
While a scarce 1807 variety, a surprising number of high grade pieces are known. The census as listed in Stephen Herrman's roster is: 64/64, 64/64, 55/55, 50/50, 45/45, which should place this coin within the lower rungs of the Condition Census.
Haseltine-7, Beistle 4-Bc, Overton-6, PCGS # 6079, Encyclopedia-4593.
Ex: Sheridan Downey (1/2000).
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
