1807 50C Draped Bust AU53 ICG
1807 50C Draped Bust AU53 ICG. O-101, R.5. Final year of the Fillet Head obverse and Heraldic reverse. The mintage of 301,076 halves was struck using eight obverse dies and six reverse dies, which resulted in 11 different die varieties. This is a single-use obverse that is paired with a reverse that was used twice (on this and O-102). This piece shows the usually seen die crack, described in Overton as, "... from bottom of 1 through lower loop of 8 to edge of 0 and running to left outside of stars."
The surfaces are bright with good portions of mint luster remaining around the devices. The underlying brightness has an overlay of reddish-brown patina that deepens gradually toward the rims. The only noticeable identifier on this piece is a short, horizontal streak over the fourth vertical stripe on the reverse. A bit softly struck on the figure of Liberty.
This piece remains the finest O-101. The top five coins known to Herrman are: 53/53, 45/45, 45/45, 45/45, 40/40.
Beistle 6-Ab, Overton-1, 2, PCGS # 6079, Encyclopedia-4593.
Purchased "raw" in 1999 by Robert Zornes; certified the following year; 2001 ANA Auction (Heritage, 8/2001), lot 6104, unsold; afterward sold privately to the present consignor.
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
