<B>1807 $5 Bust Right MS64 PCGS.</B></I> Small Date, Small Obverse Stars, Small Reverse Stars, Breen-6449, BD-1, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Obverse Die State B, Reverse Die State C, struck prior to the development of a "cud" above the T in UNITED. BD-1 receives a separate listing in Breen's 1988 <I>Encyclopedia,</B></I> since it is the only die pairing for the date with small reverse stars. An apparently unfinished die, the right olive branch is without stems on the berries, and a pair of leaves are outlined but without details. There are prominent raised die lines (as struck) on the right olive branch and the upper left shield tip. A lustrous and pleasing near-Gem. The obverse has a few faint hairlines, while the reverse is virtually pristine. Sharply struck except for the lowest right reverse star. The dies are rotated counterclockwise.<BR>The usual 1807 half eagle is the BD-8 Bust Left variety, which is in fact among the most common die marriages of all early (old tenor) five dollar pieces, along with the 1810 BD-4. Although six different die varieties are known, the 1807 Bust Right is actually significantly scarcer than the BD-8. At the MS64 level, the 1807 Bust Right is approximately four times scarcer than its Bust Left counterpart. The present lot once belonged to Harry W. Bass, Jr., the most prominent die variety collector of early gold, and the fact that he selected it for his collection speaks highly of its quality.<BR><I>Ex: A-Mark Coin, 3/78, Harry W.
