1807<$5> Bust Right MS64 NGC. B. 1-A, Breen-6449, Miller-85, R.5. Walter Breen described this as a distinct major variety, with a small date, small obverse stars, and small reverse stars. Other major varieties of the 1807 Draped Bust issue are small date, small obverse stars, and large reverse stars; small date, large obverse stars, and large reverse stars; and large date, large obverse stars, and large reverse stars. This Choice Mint State example is an early die state with no reverse rim breaks. Intermediate die states have a rim break over T of UNITED, and rare late die state coins have rim breaks over U, T, and D of UNITED. This example is almost certainly a Condition Census representative of the variety, one of only a few known Mint State coins. Possibly as many as 10 or 12 examples are known in Mint State grades, but most are at the lowest numerical levels. Probably only one or two finer examples of this die variety exist, as best we are able to determine.
This example is a splendid specimen with fully brilliant and frosty luster and lovely yellow-gold color. All of the design elements on each side are intricately detailed, although star 13 on the reverse is flat. Liberty's cheek is lightly abraded, and a few other scattered marks are apparent on the obverse, including a light hairline scratch in the right obverse field from the chin to star 8. The reverse is clearly finer and easily qualifies at the Gem level, if graded separately.
