1807 $5 Bust Left--Obverse Damage, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Unc Details. Breen-6453, BD-8, R.2. John Reich was hired as Mint assistant engraver in 1807 and worked exactly 10 years to the day before quitting, likely for salary reasons or because he failed to achieve the rank of chief engraver. The Capped Bust design is among his works, characterized by the notched 13th star seen on every obverse die during that time. On this variety the tip of the fletchings points to the tip of the 5. The obverse show numerous straight circumferential scratches between most of the star pairs, along with a longer scratch beneath the bust tip and stars 1-3. The surfaces are lightly hairlines from a past old cleaning, but much appeal remains, with no visible wear and a sharp strike on golden-yellow surfaces.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
