1807 $5 Bust Left MS65 PCGS. Breen-6453, BD-8, R.2. The reported mintage of this first-year-of issue Capped Bust to Left design type was 51,605 pieces. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, discussing the 1807 Capped Bust Left in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, 1795-1933, write that “circulated examples are easily obtained across all grade levels, and even Mint State examples can be found with ease. The usual Mint State grade falls at MS62 or MS63; gems are very rare.” In this regard, we note that PCGS and NGC combined have certified, to date, only 13 MS65 and finer 1807 Bust Left examples.
This issue consists of two varieties, BD-7 and BD-8, each having the same obverse but different reverses. On the BD-8 die marriage, the more common of the two varieties, the bottom tip of the arrow feather points to the tip of the flag in the 5, the O(F) is centered over the N of UNUM, and the upper middle leaf is near the U of UNITED.
Apricot-gold color imbued with wisps of mint-green enriches both sides of this gorgeous Gem, each of which displays glowing luster. A powerful strike manifests itself in uniformly crisp definition on the nicely centered design elements, and the dentilation is complete and strong, save for minor softness in the upper left reverse quadrant. A few light adjustment marks at the upper left and upper right reverse border serve as pedigree markers to help identify this particular example, as does a faint, completely inoffensive linear mark that extends diagonally from the lower point of star 8 to below the cap.
A simply outstanding specimen that is worthy of the finest collection, and as such is expected to elicit spirited bidding. Population: 5 in 65, 2 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
