1807 $5 Bust Left MS65 PCGS. Breen-6453, BD-8, R.2. There is something about early gold, and early half eagles in particular, that whets the collector's appetite. Many pieces are excessively rare in absolute terms, and those that are not are blessed with tremendous demand from type collectors as a result. This is an outstanding example of a coin destined for a high quality type collection. It is of interest as the first date of the new Capped Bust to Left type, designed by John Reich, and complete with his trademark notch on star 13. But more importantly, although not rare in absolute terms, the 1807 Bust Left half eagle is tremendously rare as nice as the present piece. The major grading services have combined to grade only eight such coins in MS65, with a scant four known finer. Of these, this is only the third that Heritage has had the opportunity to offer in such a lofty grade, the last of which was in our 2004 June Long Beach Signature Auction.
This apricot to olive-gold Gem is sharply struck, as is common for coins of this date. The abundant luster is of the satin variety, and the few surface abrasions are in line with the high grade. Interestingly, there are faint adjustment marks (as struck) visible on the reverse at 11:30 and 1:30. These are unusual in a coin minted this late and serve mostly as a numismatically intriguing pedigree marker, as they have only a minimal effect on this piece's obvious eye appeal. Population: 5 in 65, 2 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
