Although his Capped Bust motif has achieved its greatest popularity on the Half Dollar of 1807-1834, John Reich also designed the Half Eagle that made its debut in 1807. While Liberty's portrait is nearly identical on both denominations, particularly in 1807-1808, the placement of the eagle's wings sets the two designs apart. Mint records indicate that 51,065 Capped Bust Left Half Eagles were produced in 1807. While many of these pieces have since been lost to the meltings of early 19th century America, the fact that the denomination served its greatest purpose as backing for bank transactions explains why most survivors are minimally worn. This is not to suggest that the 1807 is a common issue in XF-AU grades, and Mint State coins are of the utmost rarity. The example that we have the honor of offering here is tied with the finest 1807 Capped Bust Left Half Eagle that we have ever handled. It is interesting to speculate how this coin survived. Perhaps it was obtained directly from the mint shortly after striking as a souvenir from the first year of this design. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that this coin was well cared for since the day of production. Both sides display a richly frosted texture with warm green-gold overtones. The razor sharp striking definition would do justice to a Liberty Half Eagle from the 1890s. Distraction-free with not even the most inconspicuous pedigree marker in evidence.
