1807 $5 Bust Left MS64 PCGS. Breen-6453, BD-8. The mintage for this date was 51,605 pieces, most of which perished long ago. Dannreuther & Bass, in their marvelous new study (Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties), note that this is the more available of the two varieties of this, the first date of this type, and rate it Rarity-2. Garrett & Guth point out that really choice Mint State pieces are elusive. The present specimen is a visual feast for the grade: carefully preserved over the last 200 years, it was minted from fresh dies with a resultant luster that is satiny and soft, the reverse is superb in all respects while the obverse shows only tiny abrasions and faint hairlines, those typically acquired when coins were placed and moved on velvet pads in days gone past, when excellent coins were often displayed at conventions on "velvet risers," to show off their qualities. These "deficiencies" are trifling, however, for this coin is sharply struck on the obverse stars, which all show detailed divisions in the centers, and the digits of the date are crisply outlined. Faint die clashing is present in the hair. The highest points of Liberty's gown are a bit soft, not quite fully struck. But the eagle is incredibly well detailed, as our photographs show--every feather is sharp, even on the eagle's neck, as is the eagle's eye. As the PCGS grade suggests, this is a beautiful, near-Gem early half eagle--worthy of a fine collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
