1807 $5 Bust Left MS62 PCGS. Breen-6453, BD-8, R.2. Medium yellow with full luster on both sides. The surfaces have a few faint hairlines and insignificant blemishes, but the overall appearance is above average. This is the common 1807 Capped Bust variety, among the most common die varieties of any early gold issue. It is also the first year of issue for the new design, and the first year of employment for John Reich, who was hired as assistant engraver at the Mint on April 1, 1807.
Contemporary sources tell us that John Reich came to America circa 1800, an immigrant from Germany. After occasional contract work, he was hired full time in 1807 and began a complete overhaul of coinage designs. The half dollar and half eagle were first, with new designs introduced later in 1807.

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
