John Reich created his Capped Bust design for the half eagles shortly after his employment at the Mint began in April 1807. It was in this year that Mint Director Robert Patterson became concerned about the engraving department. He wrote to the President concerning Robert Scot: "though indeed a meritorious and faithful officer, was yet so far advanced in life that he could not very long be expected to continue his labors." Patterson wrote further that John Reich was already serving at the Mint: "Mr. Reich is now preparing a set of new dies, in which some improvements in the devices will be introduced, which, it is hoped, will meet with public approbation." Although we can't be certain today, Mr. Scot was probably none too thrilled with this new circumstance, for he continued serving the Mint for another 17 years until his death in 1824, while Reich left after only 10 years of service.
This is a pleasing Mint State example of Reich's new design, and it has lovely green-gold color with frosty surfaces. Each side has lightly abraded and faintly hairlines surfaces that are consistent with the grade. It is a sharply struck and highly appealing example.
From The Antigo Collection.
