1807<25C> MS64 PCGS. B-2a, R.3. The denomination is distant from the U in UNITED and the top of the 5 merges into the tail. A reverse die crack that is diagnostic on later die states runs from the T in UNITED across the coin to the rim by the O in OF.
The Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle quarter of 1804-1807 is one of the forgotten series in U.S. numismatics. Other than the low mintage (6,738 pieces) 1804, a well known rarity because of its ties to the legendary silver dollar, the other three issues in this series are needed for type purposes, but are otherwise overlooked by all but the most specialized collectors. The 1807 is an important issue in that the second of the two known die marriages and the one used here, B-2, introduced a five-berry reverse for the first time in this series. Breen (1988) asserts that more than half of the reported mintage of 220,643 pieces probably represents coins dated 1806.
This spectacular near-Gem is better defined around the peripheries and on the stars above the eagle's head than most high grade survivors, and is particularly well struck elsewhere. The surfaces are virtually untoned and satiny in texture, with excellent vibrancy for a nearly 200 year old silver coin. There are faint clashmarks in the fields of both obverse and reverse, but neither side reveals any singularly distracting abrasions. An underrated rarity from both absolute and condition standpoints.
