1807 $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Breen-6124, BD-1, R.3. There is no doubt that this date is the most plentiful quarter eagle issued prior to 1834. In Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties, John Dannreuther provides current population estimates for each die variety, with an estimate of 250 to 350 examples of this variety, the only die variety known for the date. This total represents 25% of the total for the entire series from 1796 to 1807.
The obverse exhibits faint die cracks through the date, stars on the left, and most of LIBERTY. The reverse may be lightly lapped, must there is no evidence of cracks or other die defects. This was a remarkable reverse die, for it was used with every quarter eagle coined from 1805 through 1807, as well as all 1807 dimes, approximately 175,000 coins! At the time, the typical die lasted for only a few thousand strikes. In fact, other than the faint obverse cracks, there are no significant die states known for this issue. Harry Bass retained just one example for his collection, disposing of duplicates that didn't represent significant die states.
This example is a splendid Mint State piece with frosty luster and brilliant yellow-gold surfaces that exhibit a hint of green. Both sides display the usual tiny abrasions that are expected at the grade level, but there are no individually significant blemishes. Most of the design elements on both sides are nicely detailed, with slight weakness near the centers on each side. Population: 12 in 62, 8 finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
