1807<$2 1/2> MS61 NGC. Bass-3016, Breen-6124, R.3. The 1807 has a mintage of only 6,812 pieces, and yet even with such a low mintage it is widely considered as the type coin for the Capped Bust Right series. Few quarter eagles were needed in the channels of commerce in early 19th century America, and most of the ones that were produced were eventually melted as their face value was less than their intrinsic value. As a result, this type is rarely seen in any grade and Uncirculated pieces are especially elusive. This piece is generally well defined. The mint luster is a bit thin on the obverse but the reverse is quite fulsome. Light reddish patina is seen around the margins. A few light adjustment marks are seen in the center of the obverse, otherwise the coin is quite clean for the grade. Census: 29 in 61, 21 finer (11/05).
From The John H.
