1807 $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Bass-3016, Breen-6124, R.3. Pale
1807<$2 1/2> MS61 NGC. Bass-3016, Breen-6124, R.3. Pale gold and notably lustrous, showing just a hint of reflectivity. As usually found on this date, the strike is weak in the centers, with incompleteness notable on the hair above Liberty's ear, through the upper half of the shield and in the center of the banner. The mintage of 6,812 pieces, although low, is the highest total of any quarter eagle before the Classic Head design began in 1834, and more than twice the nearest competitor of the Capped Bust to Right design. However, although this date is common in relation to the type and therefore often used for type collection purposes, it is still quite rare in absolute terms and particularly so in Mint State grades. This coin will be a prize of the winning bidder's collection.
From The Manistee Collection.
