1807 1C Comet Variety MS63 Brown PCGS. S-271, R.1, D
1807 1C "Comet" Variety MS63 Brown PCGS. S-271, R.1, Die State VIII. The final year of the Draped Bust series of large cents also contains one of the most spectacular varieties. A linear die flaw that resembles the tail of a comet is seen in the upper left obverse field. While far from the rarest variety of the year, the "Comet" is certainly the best-known.
After the slowdown in demand for cents in 1806, and the subsequent press breakdown in April of that year, production of cents once again resumed in 1807, most likely using the dies that had been idled by the press breakdown in 1806. Production was heavy in 1807. Dies, such as the ones used to strike this coin, were obviously used far beyond a normal lifetime for cent mintages.
This particular die state is an advanced one that shows the die bulge in the left obverse field, and a crack that extends along the bulge to the left rim. The Condition Census for this particular variety ranges from AU50 to MS63. We are not certain which coin this is, or if it is even listed on the Condition Census. The surfaces are subdued gray-brown with just the faintest undertone of red still visible on the reverse when the coin is angled beneath a light. Well, but not fully struck. The surfaces are notably free from abrasions. The only mentionable flaw is a slide mark with a light gray appearance over the upper hair curl. An exceptional opportunity for the copper specialist.
