1806 50C Pointed 6, Stem XF40 PCGS
1806 50C Pointed 6, Stem XF40 PCGS. O-113, R.5. Curiously, this single-use obverse shows no signs of die cracking. A single crack shows on the reverse, but Obverse 8 was retired after this one die marriage. The obverse shows the base of B higher than I, and the top of the Y in LIBERTY higher than T. Also, the 6 is smaller than 180 and higher. While no die states are recorded for O-113, this piece is obviously a slightly earlier striking than the next piece. The die crack from the rim through the fourth feather on the left terminates just before it reaches the ribbon.
The surfaces on this piece has soft gray patina over each side with deeper golden-russet accents around the obverse periphery. The striking details are soft on Liberty's hair and also on the reverse stars. Only a few light abrasions can be seen with a magnifier, the coin appears nearly flawless to the unaided eye.
This piece is tied with three others at the top of the Condition Census for the variety. To date, no O-113 halves are recorded (on Herrman's list from auctions and mail bid sales) finer than 40/40.
Beistle 5-Ca, Overton-24, PCGS # 39314, Encyclopedia-4591.
Ex: Michael Summers.
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
