1806<50C> Pointed 6, Stem. O-122, High R.6. VG10 NGC. This rare die variety is identified by a bold vertical die crack from the reverse rim past 6 o'clock, up along the left tail feathers, and through the shield along the outer third stripe. Overton mentions a second crack, from the fletchings to the base of U to the left ribbon end, also present here. A prominent clashmark right of the M in UNUM is also noted. Although it does not sport a high numerical grade, the current example shows the important die characteristics, and has full rims aside from the tops of ERIC in AMERICA. This may be the latest known state. The area between the die crack and the left most gule of the third stripe is entirely broken away. The horizontal shield lines left of the crack are on a higher plane, thus receiving more wear, and appearing here with little detail. Stephen Herrman reports that 15 examples of this variety are known, with a few in higher grades. This example probably just misses the top six for the die marriage.
Ex: Larry Briggs (2/1989). Envelope Included.
