1806 50C Pointed 6, Stem AU50 PCGS
1806 50C Pointed 6, Stem AU50 PCGS. O-116 prime, R.3. Third use of Obverse 9. Paired here with a reverse that was used two more times, but both of those were only briefly used to create R.8 coins (O-128, 129). On this advanced state of Obverse 9, there is lessened repunching visible on the Y in LIBERTY and none of the die defect at the top of the 6 remains. The die cracks on the lower and left part of the obverse are obvious, but Overton mentions a crack at the top of LIBER on the O-115a. This crack is not present on this piece, suggesting the Reverse L coins may have been struck before the O-115a pieces. This coin is a prime die state as seen by the lack of the normally seen die crack on the lower and left periphery of the reverse.
This high grade example is bright overall with just a hint of pale golden color around the margins. Sharply struck, except on the forecurls of Liberty's hair. Significant amounts of original mint luster remain around the outer devices and the recesses of the eagle's wings. This may well be the finest O-116 prime known.
Beistle 7-F, Overton-31, PCGS # 39319, Encyclopedia-4591.
Ex: Sheridan Downey (5/2001).
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
