1806 50C Knobbed 6, Small Stars AU58 NGC
1806 50C Knobbed 6, Small Stars AU58 NGC. O-106, R.4. This Small Stars obverse die is paired with the six-berries reverse (Reverse B) first used on the Large Stars O-105. The obverse differs from O-105 in two important ways: the lack of repunching on the T in LIBERTY, and the sharp, pointed stars that are clear of the milling. Also, as noted in Breen, the L in LIBERTY is low and the 8 is repunched.
Each side has a dual-toned scheme with deep gray-burgundy and blue, while the highpoints of the devices and recesses of the design show silvery-brilliance. Most of the mint luster still remains and shines brightly through the toning. Weakly struck at the top of Liberty's head. Also slightly soft on the stars on the right of the reverse, with light roller marks present in this same area that were not struck out of the coin at the time of manufacture.
A scarcer variety, there are a surprising number of high grade examples known. The finest is an MS65, followed by an MS60 and several AU58 and AU55 coins. This piece is probably tied for third finest known.
Haseltine-12, Overton-12, PCGS # 39306, Encyclopedia-4586.
Ex: Stack's (3/98), lot 491 (sold as an O-105).
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
