1806 50C 6 Over Inverted 6 AU50 NGC
1806 50C 6 Over Inverted 6 AU50 NGC. O-112, R.4. Second and final use of Obverse 7. The vertical die crack in the center of the obverse is especially pronounced on this piece. This bisecting crack produced a coin on two separate planes, with the left portion of the obverse higher and sharper than the right side. This die pairing also shows an additional crack from star 11 into the right obverse field. The reverse is only moderately distinctive as a variety with the berry arrangement and the position of the leaf relative to the I in AMERICA of note on that side. The reverse was used one more time, to produce the O-113 pairing, but 112 was the final chance to produce a limited number of coins from Obverse 7.
Each side is deeply toned, and the obverse displays considerable underlying brightness. Both obverse and reverse show shades of deep blue, rose, and gray; lighter, of course, over the highpoints and deeper in hue in the fields and recesses. Only small and individually insignificant marks are seen on each side.
This is the finest O-112 recorded by Stephen Herrman. The next four grades he records are 45/45 (multiples), 40/40 (multiples), 35/35 (multiples), 30/30 (multiples). This is a significant offering of an R.4 early half dollar.
Haseltine-2, Beistle 2a-C, Overton-23, PCGS # 6078, Encyclopedia-4591.
Ex: Carl A.
