1806 $5 Round Top 6, 7x6 Stars MS64 PCGS. Breen-6448, BD-6, R.2. BD-6 is the only early half eagle die marriage with the obverse stars arranged seven left, and six right, relative to LIBERTY. The usual star arrangement is 8x5, which makes more sense since the large letters in LIBERTY tend to crowd the right side stars. The engraver still manages an aesthetically pleasing appearance for the obverse die, since the left-side stars are also closely spaced, leaving space near the cap and lowest shoulder curl. BD-6 is also the only die with a knob (or round) top 6. Perhaps the wrong punch was selected by the engraver, since the 6 is taller than the other three date digits, and touches Liberty's bust.
This is a splendid, high-end near-Gem of BD-6, likely among the finest surviving examples of the variety. Both sides are smooth, and only a thin, shallow graze near star 11 precludes an even higher certified grade. The strike is sharp, since design softness is relegated to the left border of the eagle's shield. The canary-gold toning is uniform and original. Luster dominates both the fields and devices, and the eye appeal is superior for the type and grade. Adjustment marks appear to be absent at first glance, and close inspection locates only a few trivial mint-made adjustment marks along portions of the reverse rim. Most gold type sets are missing an example of the Capped Bust Left, and those who require an exceptional representative need look no further than the present lot. Certified in a green label PCGS holder. Population: 38 in 64, 1 finer (2/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
