1806 $5 Round Top 6, 7x6 Stars MS64 NGC. B. 5-E, Breen-6448, BD-6, R.2. There is no doubt that the 1806 Round Top 6 or Knobbed 6 variety is the single most common Draped Bust half eagle. Perhaps as many as 1,000 examples still exist today, although John Dannreuther estimated the total population between 600 and 900 coins. Although it is commonly named for the distinctive shape of the final digit in the date, seen nowhere else in the series, this obverse is also unusual for its star layout, with seven stars to the left and six to the right. Only this 1806 variety along with the 1807 half eagles have this particular pattern.
This example is a remarkable near-Gem with fully brilliant yellow-gold surfaces tending toward green. Both sides of this piece have frosty luster and the surfaces are nearly mark-free. Slight design weakness is evident in the eagle's wing just left of the shield and among the vertical stripes, but all other details are boldly defined. The reverse has a fine crack through the N and arrowheads, with another visible through stars 10 and 13 to the right edge of the eagle's neck.
From The Freedom Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
