1806/5 50C XF40 PCGS. O-104b, R.5. Probably R.7 as a die state. Few obverse / reverse die combinations have a terminal die state that results in retained die cuds on each side. This is a spectacular and highly collectible die state with few examples known. In this state, the small die cud over U has expanded to also cover half of N. There is also a longer cud over the right portion of I and covering the tops of TE. All the obverse die cracks on O-104a are seen here but are much heavier on this piece. There are three separate but related retained cuds from star 11 to below the bust of Liberty. The rim-to-rim break over star 11 is more advanced than the other two and is nearly a full cud.
The surfaces on this piece are richly toned in shades of gray and golden-rose with bright, silvery accents over the highpoints where wear is most evident. Softly struck overall with the usual weakness on the reverse on the eagle's head and upper stars.
Only four examples of the ‘b' variant are recorded in Herrman's listing of auction appearances. The finest was the third edition Overton plate coin, an NGC XF40, a piece that was withdrawn from a Downey Mail Bid Sale in 1993. Inspection of the plate coin from that edition shows that this is a different example. Thus, there are two coins known at the 40/40 grade level that are currently tied for finest known for this die state. The other three pieces recorded are 20/20, 20/20, and 15/15.
PCGS #6077, Encyclopedia-4582.
Ex: Michael Summers.
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
