1806/4 $2 1/2 8x5 Stars MS63 NGC. Breen-6122, BD-1, Hi
1806/4 $2 1/2 8x5 Stars MS63 NGC. Breen-6122, BD-1, High R.4. In 1806, two varieties of quarter eagles were coined, and both are overdates. They are distinguished by the specific overdate feature, either 1806/4 as offered here or 1806/5. Alternatively, they are also distinguished by their obverse star arrangement. This 1806/4 overdate has eight stars to the left and five stars to the right, while the 1806/5 overdate has seven stars to the left and six to the right as on all later issues. The obverse die of this variety was an obsolete and unused die produced in 1804 as evidenced by the old star arrangement.
This piece is an intermediate die state. The obverse has several fine cracks: from the border to the tops of LIB, through the tops of ERTY, through the base of the date, joining all stars on the left (actually a series of cracks through different stars), connecting stars 9 and 10, and through stars 12 and 13 to the border near the bust. A unique later state is known with a heavy rim break over LI. Almost remarkably, the reverse, which was used in 1805 and also for some dimes, shows no evidence of cracks.
This is an exceptional Mint State example with prooflike fields and gorgeous yellow color that is accented by lilac and rose toning on both sides. The central obverse shows some weakness of strike, and this is a direct result of the heavy reverse adjustment marks that criss-cross the entire surface. Census: 2 in 63, 1 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
