1806<1/2 C> Small 6, With Stems. C-3, B-2, R.6. Die State 1--Corroded--NCS. VG Details. VG8 EAC. Small, high 6; Six berries left, with stems. The reverse appears to be perfect without any trace of the die crack through the tops of ICA, which is seen on nearly every known example. However, it is important to realize that the light corrosion and verdigris in this area may obscure a die crack if it were present. This variety was not described or listed by Gilbert, even though the coin he used to illustrate the Small 6, Stems variety was from this die marriage. It is quite interesting that Gilbert's description was from a different coin than his plate, for he described the correct obverse for C-2 with LIBERTY farther to the right. Although Gilbert illustrated it earlier, this variety was "discovered" in the Neil Collection, and described by B. Max Mehl as the obverse of Gilbert 1 and the reverse of Gilbert 2, which was the correct attribution.
Among all Draped Bust Half Cent varieties, the 1806 C-3 die combination has the third lowest overall Condition Census, behind only 1808/7 C-1 and 1804 C-2. Despite its lightly corroded surfaces, this is quite a pleasing example of the variety with considerable detail remaining. The surfaces are olive on the obverse, and dark steel on the reverse. There appears to be a complete lack of individual defects that could serve as pedigree markers. On the obverse, a couple tiny marks are noted by the digit 1, and on the reverse is a small pitmark above the right end of the fraction bar.
Ex: Steve Fischer; Jim McGuigan (6/16/1984). Envelope Included.
