1806<1/2 C> Large 6, With Stems. C-4, B-4, R.1. Die State 2. MS63 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. Large 6 joined to drapery; Five berries left, with stems. The digit 6 is repunched, with slight evidence visible on the upper left of that digit. Clearly, this is the most common of all Draped Bust Half Cents in Mint State grades, and quite a number exist with some original red mint color. Nearly all Mint State survivors are from a hoard acquired and dispersed by the Chapman Brothers a century after the coins were struck. This is a splendid Mint State example with attractive surfaces displaying a blend of lighter and darker brown color. The reverse retains considerable red mint color. Unlike so many from the Chapman hoard, this example is relatively free from unsightly carbon spots. Like so many others, though, this example has considerable weakness at the drapery as well as the terminal leaves and lower right portion of the wreath. The reverse is rotated about 30 degrees clockwise.
Ex: Unidentified B. Max Mehl sale, lot 1047; Harold Bareford; William Bareford (5/25/1984). Envelope Included.
