1805 C-2 R5 Small 5 with Stems PCGS graded Fine details, environmental damage
1805 C-2 R5 Small 5 with Stems PCGS graded Fine details, environmental damage. Sharpness overall near F12, especially on the reverse where the details suggest a significantly higher grade, but the surfaces are covered with very fine roughness, strongest in the protected areas. No verdigris, but there are traces of very shallow black scale on both sides. The only marks are some very light hairline scratches on both sides, all well hidden in the natural patina. Dark olive brown and steel with slightly lighter steel brown toning covering the devices. EDS, prior to any hint of a bulge in the field before the portrait. The date and legends are complete and strong, and the reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW from a normal head-to-foot die orientation. Not perfect, but still a decent example of a rare variety that almost never comes without serious problems. Our grade is net VG8. The PCGS label mentions the Cohen-2 die variety and Carvin Goodridge provenance. PCGS has graded 1 other example in VG10 for the variety (#35182).
Estimated Value $3,500-UP.

Provenance: Ex Olde Town Coins (at a show in Boston, Mass) 3/4/1977.
