1805<50C> O-110, R.5. VF25 NGC. The obverse die, which was used with four different reverse dies, is the only 1805-dated obverse with both star 1 and star 13 touching or nearly touching the device. The reverse only has four berries, while the other three reverse dies all have five berries. In the context of pre-Turban half dollars, this is a scarce variety. By definition, the number existing is similar to R.5 varieties of the Capped Bust half dollars, yet there are not nearly as many collectors for the earlier pieces, thus there is considerably less demand. The reverse die has the same die crack from the wingtip to the tops of AM that is found on earlier marriages, O-102 and O-108. The fields display medium gray toning, which sets off the silvery-gray design elements. Well defined devices are nicely centered, and the surfaces are refreshingly clean. A very pleasing example.
Ex: Stack's (12/1984), lot 816. Envelope Included.
