1805 50C VF20 PCGS. O-112a, R.2. Ex: Jules Reiver. Probably R.7 as a die state. There are two states of this advanced die state. The first shows the cud only over ES, and the second and more advanced shows the cud over TES. This coin was struck from the later state of the die, as the diagnostic circular die crack through STATES and the upper portion of the clouds has developed into a retained cud. The retained cud on the reverse is the cause for excessive weakness at the lower portion of the obverse, obliterating the 18 in the date. The late die state was not described by Overton.
The surfaces display lavender, gold, blue, and gray toning, and are remarkably clean for a circulated coin.
With so few examples known of the ‘a' die state, it is difficult to speak in terms of condition rarity. However, Herrman's listing of coins in auction and mail bid lists enumerates only three coins. They are graded: 45/45, 20/20, 20/20.
Haseltine-11; Beistle 5-F; Overton-20; PCGS# 39286; Encyclopedia-4577.
Ex: 1986 ANA Mid-Winter Auction (Heritage,2/1986), lot 2706; Jules Reiver Collection (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 22539.
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
