1805 50C Fine 15 NGC. O-105, R.5. After the breakup of Obverse 3, the next Wide Date 1805 half used a new obverse that is characterized by the stars large and close together. But it differs from the O-104 by the position of the final two digits in the date, which are closer to each other than previously seen.
This variety has the same reverse as that used on O-103 and O-104, and on O-105 it begins its final breakup, with a heavy rim break above the ATE of STATES that engulfs the tops of TE. In the more advanced state of the die (O-105a), a heavy break will develop at the top of ITE in UNITED, although it is not present on this example.
This example exhibits light gray patina with reddish-gold accents that cling to portions of the design elements. Nice definition for the grade, and the surfaces are relatively clean.
Haseltine-9; Not in Beistle; Overton-12; PCGS# 39278; Encyclopedia-4581.
Ex: Julian Leidman (10/1979); Jules Reiver Collection (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 22529.
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
