1805 50C Fine 12 ANACS. O-104a, Low R.5. A spectacular late (terminal) die state of this scarce, early half dollar. This is the latest die state seen, perhaps deserving of an O-104 ‘b' designation, with a full rim break over stars 9 through 12. Although the variety is rated Low R.5, with close to 70 examples known, the late die state pieces with a full rim break are extremely rare. Only seven or eight examples are known. When this piece is examined, it is obvious that very few coins could have been produced and even fewer could have survived. The reverse, however, was used again to strike both early and later reverse die states of O-105.
Both sides have light silver color on the devices with some olive toning, and the fields exhibit a combination of sky blue, lilac, and gold color. The underlying surfaces show a peculiar brightness that indicates this piece was probably cleaned many years ago.
Haseltine-7; Not in Beistle; Overton-11; PCGS# 39276; Encyclopedia-4581.
Ex: Robert Zornes.
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
