1805/4 50C XF45 PCGS. O-101a, R.3. The Flannagan catalog reminded readers: "B. Max Mehl was fond of referring to this overdate variety as the closest one could come to an 1804 half dollar."
This late die state shows a heavy die crack through the tops of RI. This crack eventually forms a full cud, with the terminal die state represented by a single example.
This is an exceptional example for the grade with surviving luster visible through the pleasing gray-brown surfaces, enhanced by hints of blue and iridescent toning. Typical handling marks are evident on each side, fully consistent with the limited circulation that this piece experienced.
This late die state is significantly scarcer than its early die state counterpart, both in absolute and conditional terms. The finest (and only) examples listed in Herrman's Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized are 45/45, 40/40, 12/12. The lack of examples that have appeared in public auction leads us to believe this die state may be significantly scarcer than its R.3 listing, perhaps as scarce as R.6.
Haseltine-2; Beistle 1-Aa; Overton-2; PCGS# 39291; Encyclopedia-4573.
Ex: Phillip Flannagan Sale (Bowers and Merena, 11/2001), lot 4015; Harry Laibstain (11/2001).
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
