1805/4<50C> O-103a, High R.5. VF35 NGC. This is the second overdate obverse with the entire 4 visible beneath the overpunched 5. Easily identified as an O-103 by the distance of star 1 from Liberty's hair curl; the other obverse has star 1 touching the second curl. The die crack from Liberty's nose through the Y of LIBERTY and star 8 that Overton mentions for O-103 becomes heavier and extends across the bust to the curls and splits to form a triangular break around stars 1 and 2. The area between these cracks, covering star 1 and part of star 2, has sunken slightly in the die, forming a retained cud over this area. The Reiver Collection O-103a displays light to medium gray-blue patination with faint gold undertones that are more apparent on the reverse. Relatively strong definition is noted on the design elements. The surfaces are quite clean, and exhibit just a few minor obverse contact marks. An extremely popular die state for the dramatic and heavy die cracks, particularly for the triangle shaped cracks on the left obverse.
Ex: Julian Leidman (5/1982). Envelope Included.
