1805 $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Breen-6121, Bass-3012, R.4, the only known die pairing. The Capped Bust Right Quarter Eagle type commenced in 1796 and lasted through 1807, but the combined mintage of all ten Guide Book issues (excluding the 1796 No Stars) fails to reach 20,000 coins. The rarity of these issues is largely unappreciated, and while the 1805 doesn't stand out within the series, it is really quite elusive in the overall sense. This borderline Condition Census example boasts smooth yellow-gold surfaces with subtle reddish accents on the reverse. Under magnification, wispy adjustment marks can be seen in the vicinity of the date and across the portrait. Population: 2 in 61, 4 finer (11/04).
From The Cincinnati Collection.
