1805 $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Breen-6121, BD-1, R.4. This is the only known die marriage. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth write in their book Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins that: "Later the die was annealed (softened), a 6 was punched over the 5, and more quarter eagles were struck. Such economies were common in the early days of the Philadelphia Mint, but it was quite unusual to reuse a die in this manner (most other overdates involve dies that had never been hardened or used to strike coins before)."
This high-end AU specimen displays bright yellow-gold surfaces with a few speckles of deeper orange-gold in limited areas of the obverse. The design features are well defined, save for weakness in portions of the motto on the ribbon and on the adjacent neck and breast of the eagle. A few obverse adjustment marks are noted. Census: 13 in 58, 9 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
