1805 10C 4 Berries MS66 PCGS. JR-2, R.2. Just two die
1805<10C> 4 Berries MS66 PCGS. JR-2, R.2. Just two die varieties are known, and they are quickly and easily distinguished by the berry count on the reverse with either four berries or five berries. Both varieties were coined from a common obverse die. The five berries variety was struck first, followed by this four berries variety with a thin obverse die crack through ERT. This variety is the second most common die marriage of all Draped Bust dimes, behind only the 1807 issue. In addition to the die crack, this example also exhibits fine clash marks on both sides, and a patch of die roughness on the reverse between the D and the left wing.
The obverse has the standard 7x6 star layout with stars 1, 7, and 13 each distant from the devices. Star 8 lightly touches the top of Y. The date is closely spaced and the digit 5 leans slightly to the right. Its tip lightly touches the drapery, and is extended well into the drapery by a die scratch.
The reverse die has a distinctive arrangement of 13 stars, in two rows of six each, with a single star right of the eagle's head. The arrangement is known as a line star pattern, unlike the usual arcing star layout. A single star is located high above the eagle's head, with five stars to the left and seven to the right. None of the letters in the statutory legend touch any of the devices, and there is considerable space between STATES and OF.
This is an amazing Premium Gem example with sharp design details and satiny luster. Both sides exhibit pale reddish-lilac color with peripheral gold and iridescent toning. A tiny mark is noted on Liberty's jaw, and a few faint hairlines can be seen on the reverse with close inspection. Otherwise, the surfaces are pristine and wonderful. This remarkable Gem possesses splendid aesthetic appeal and will undoubtedly be a prized item for its new owner. Population: 4 in 66, 3 finer
