1805 10C 4 Berries MS61 PCGS. JR-2, R.2. Of all the Draped Bust dime issues, those of 1805 and 1807 are more plentiful than the others. Dimes of 1805 exist in two different varieties, with either four or five berries on the reverse. The Four Berries reverse, cataloged as JR-2, is slightly more common. Authors of the Early Dime Book note a frequency of about 70% for the Four Berries variety. Perhaps a few dozen Mint State examples of the date exist, and those pieces are distributed evenly between the two varieties. Population figures from the grading services seem to suggest a much higher survival in Mint State grades, certainly the result of numerous resubmissions.
When the opportunity arises to examine Mint State coins, details are sometimes noticed that are not otherwise readily apparent. The obverse die, which was used for both 1805 varieties, has a sharp spine that angles into the drapery from the right top of the digit 5 in the date. This extension of the digit is also seen at the left top. The obverse die has a light crack through ERTY, confirming the emission sequence. The JR-2 variety was struck after JR-1.
This is a splendid Mint State example with excellent eye appeal. Although certain details are weakly defined, most of the design elements are bold. The surfaces have brilliant satiny luster beneath pale gray color, accented with intermingled gold, russet, and blue toning. The reverse is a little deeper with additional steel color. Lot:6177
