1805<1/2 C> Small 5, With Stems. C-2, B-2, High R.5. Die State 1--Corroded--NCS. Fine Details. AG3 EAC. Small, centered 5; Highest leaf below left side of S. In the Draped Bust Half Cent series, there are five key varieties. They are 1802 C-1, 1804 C-2, 1805 C-2, 1806 C-3, and 1808/7 C-1. The Reiver Collection is missing only one, the last of these five. Today there are at most about three dozen examples known of 1805 C-2. If the pedigree indicating this coin came from Carl Wurtzbach is accurate, it is most likely the example listed in Breen's Condition Census as "Fine," but not seen by him. The Wurtzbach Collection was sold by Barney Bluestone in 1943, and the 1805 "Gilbert-4" was lot 1615A. Three-quarters of the obverse is medium brown with the remainder dark steel. The reverse is essentially the opposite with mostly dark steel, intermingled with lighter brown color. The surfaces are noticeably corroded.
Ex: Carl Wurtzbach; B. Max Mehl (1950); Julian Leidman (10/7/1981). Envelope Included.
