1805<1/2 C> Medium 5, No Stems. C-1, B-1, Low R.2. Die State 1. AU58 NGC. XF45 EAC. Medium 5, doubled crossbar; Stemless wreath. The Medium 5, Stemless variety used to be called Small 5, Stemless, but the size of the digit 5 is between the true Small and Large 5 varieties. The flag of the 5 is repunched; this example shows that feature quite clearly. This is an early die state with a short rim break below the right ribbon on the reverse. Also, the centering allows the rim breaks over MER to be visible, an unusual occurrence. The reverse die was used for half cents dated 1804, 1805, and 1806, and this time they were actually used in the same order as the dates appearing on the coins. Quite often, that is not the case. This is a lovely example with lustrous surfaces and medium olive coloration. Splashes of steel toning are visible on the obverse. The surfaces are exceptional.
Ex: Unidentified B.
